1. Information We Collect

SafeBeat collects only what is necessary to provide the service:

• Phone number — used for authentication and to identify you to your contacts.
• Safety status — whether you have marked yourself as Safe or Need Help.
• Location data — neighbourhood-level location captured only when you tap the status button. Never tracked in the background.
• Display name — optional. Only collected if you choose to add it in your profile.
• Push token — used to send safety notifications when a contact's status changes.

2. How We Use Your Information

Your information is used solely to operate SafeBeat:

• Your phone number creates your account and matches you with contacts.
• Your safety status and neighbourhood location are shared only with contacts who have your number saved and are registered SafeBeat users.
• Push tokens are used exclusively to send safety-related notifications.

We do not use your data for advertising, analytics sold to third parties, or any purpose beyond operating the app.

3. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.

Your safety status and neighbourhood-level location are visible only to contacts who have your phone number saved on their device and are registered SafeBeat users.

We use Firebase (Google) to store your data securely. Firebase's privacy policy applies to infrastructure-level data handling.

4. Location Data

SafeBeat accesses your location only when you actively tap the status button. Location is never tracked in the background.

We store neighbourhood-level precision only (e.g. "North York, Toronto") — not your street address or exact GPS coordinates.

You may use SafeBeat without sharing your location. You will be prompted for location permission on first use and can deny it at any time in your device settings.

5. Data Retention & Deletion

Your data is retained as long as your account exists.

You may delete your account at any time from the Profile tab. Deletion permanently removes your phone number, safety status, location, and push token from our systems immediately.

Residual data in Firebase backups may persist for up to 30 days after deletion.

6. Security

Your data is stored in Google Firebase with industry-standard security. Access is restricted by Firestore security rules so only authenticated users can read relevant data.

We do not store passwords. Authentication is handled via one-time SMS codes through Firebase Phone Auth.

7. Children's Privacy

SafeBeat is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with their information, please contact us to have it removed.
